Kelley’s tenure as Michigan’s Attorney General is frequently noted for its duration. Not surprising considering he served 37 years in that post, longer than anyone in U.S. history.  But Kelley prefers to be known for the ground-breaking nature of his service.

Inspired by then U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy, he was the first state attorney general to start Consumer Protection, Environmental, and Civil Rights Divisions. He also argued landmark election and busing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.  

He commanded respect as Attorney General, even by the Republican governors he advised and sometimes battled. “My father told me that any fool can make enemies, but it takes a smart man to make friends out of his potential enemies,” adds Kelley.  These time-tested relationships allow Kelley to resolve issues at the highest levels of government.

He transcended partisan politics when he battled utilities, insurance companies, and retailers on behalf of the little guy.  The very interests he once battled now seek his advice.

He remains professionally active at an age when most men have long since retired “I look forward to the interaction with clients, with public officials, and with my colleagues at the firm.  It keeps me young.”
